Puca-pucara was believed to be a military checkpoint used by the Incas. It has high walls and buildings believed to be watchtowers, which are what led scientists and archaeologists to believe that it was used for military purposes. Other scientists believed that Incan emperors used it as a resting point for when they were going to go to the baths of Tambo Machay. It offers spectacular views of the valley of Cusco and of glaciers as well. The reddish color of the buildings contributed to its name; Puca-pucara translated into english means red fort.
